- Proper coughing and sneezing etiquette can reduce the spread of disease and as a child, we were told to simply cover our mouths.
- The most important thing to remember is to direct your spray into fabric, like your sleeves. Clothing traps bacteria so it dies before infecting others.
- But don't cough into your collar or onto your wrist -- though aiming at fabric, you are still spreading bacteria to your hands.
- The sleeve-directed cough/sneeze, ideally toward your bicep if you are wearing a longer-sleeved shirt, can be a double-edged sword for people like me. As a regular lipstick or gloss wearer, I've left my share of imprints on clothing.
- Use of tissues -- this method of cough/sneeze control can result in hand contamination, but if you must, be sure to throw the tissue away immediately, never to be reused.
- Once you learn proper coughing and sneezing habits, you start noticing all the gross, infectious things you and your co-workers do.
